Though it began with biscuits in 1926, Wellness has one of the longest histories in the natural dog food industry. It wasn’t until the last few decades that it expanded to the myriad of selections on offer today, but Wellness has always had a commitment to quality that is reflected in their products. Their ingredients are of such high quality that the company says they are human grade, adding to the appeal of the Wellness brand. Wellness CORE is the brand’s grain-free, high protein recipe and definitely one of our favorites in the Wellness line. CORE is offered as dry kibble, air-dried bits, wet canned food or treats. The air-dried process is especially unique, as it means both nutrients and flavor are better preserved. This food contains all the good stuff you’d expect to find in a Wellness recipe, in a format that even the fussiest pups will enjoy.

Pros: Wellness CORE is high in protein, contains no grain, corn, soy or artificial fillers. It contains high amounts of omega fatty acids, antioxidants and fiber from fruits and veggies and is well-supplemented with vitamins, minerals, and probiotics. It is available in several varieties, so you can choose what best suits your pup’s needs.

Cons: There really aren’t a lot of negatives to note with Wellness CORE. The kibble, wet canned and air-dried food are very high quality with no harmful ingredients. Perhaps, as with any natural dog food, we’d like to see less supplementation and more use of natural sources of vitamins and minerals, but this is pushing the food and its price into the super-premium market.

Ingredients: The entire Wellness CORE line features quality protein sources like chicken as the first one or two ingredients. You will also find a strong blend of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables including kale, spinach, apples, blueberries and more. Wellness always makes sure their food contains commendable levels of omega fatty acids, so critical for every dog’s heart, brain, skin, and coat. Their CORE line gains healthy fats and oils from multiple sources like salmon oil, flaxseed and canola oil. The CORE dry formulas also contain supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin as well as green tea extract and probiotics.

Price: Wellness is reasonably priced for a high-quality food, but their CORE line is slightly more expensive. It is all relative when we are considering the health of our furred family and it’s always worth it to spend a little more to nourish their health from the inside out.

Ideal Diet For: Wellness CORE is a great food that we can highly recommend for all dogs. The air-dried food may be especially beneficial for dogs that are picky about what they eat because as we noted, the air drying process preserves flavor as well as nutrients. Since CORE is largely modeled after the ancestral diet trend, it can benefit any canine’s overall health. Natural dog food can also be critical for any dogs that have food allergies, sensitive digestion or any kinds of health conditions that could be exacerbated by a poor diet high in salt, sugar or starch.
