Solid Gold has carried a pretty solid reputation since it was first founded by a dog breeder in 1974. The brand was started when its founder saw how dogs in Europe were healthier because of a more natural diet than their American counterparts. She crafted a dog food with more wholesome ingredients, minus any of the bad stuff like by-products, wheat, corn or soy. The result is a dog food that has gained a lot of trust among consumers. Solid Gold’s Star Chaser Puppy Food has a lot of very good things going for it, including the brand’s signature 20 superfood blend that ensures your dog is getting the right vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and healthy omega fatty acids that they need. There are a few ingredients that appear in some Solid Gold formulas that we’d rather they left out, but the overall takeaway is that this is a food far surpassing many others on the shelves.
Pros: Solid Gold doesn’t use any grain, gluten, corn or soy, and you won’t find low-quality fillers or by-products on any of their labels. This food has the protein from chicken and chicken meal that puppies need, as well as healthy complex carbs, omega fatty acids and lots of excellent fruits and veggies. It is well-supplemented and contains probiotics for better digestion.
Cons: As with several of Solid Gold’s varieties, Star Chaser has added salt fairly high on the ingredient list. Sodium content is still within safe levels, but it is something to keep in mind. This food also contains a synthetic version of the essential amino acid methionine, found in meat protein. It is a critical compound so while it is good that they’ve added it, its inclusion does raise the question as to how much meat protein versus plant protein is in this food.
Ingredients: Quality protein comes from chicken and chicken meal, followed by peas, brown rice and pearled barley for carbohydrates. Star Chaser has great levels of omega fatty acids from canola oil, flaxseed and salmon oil. It also contains sesame and almond oil, part of the superfood blend that Solid Gold includes in all of their recipes. Fruits and vegetables like pumpkin, squash, broccoli, beets, cranberries, apples, pears and more give this food an antioxidant boost. Along with probiotics, Star Chaser also contains taurine and l-carnitine for heart and metabolism support. As noted, it does have some added salt.
Price: Solid Gold is moderately priced when you consider a lot of other high-quality foods. It is filled with good ingredients and most consumers are very happy with the brand, making it worth a little extra.
Ideal Diet For: Solid Gold Star Chaser puppy food is a well-balanced diet for a lot of puppies. Due to the presence of taurine and l-carnitine, it may be especially good for puppies that need to maintain a lean muscle mass like Labradors who may struggle with their weight.
