Horizon Pet Food is a family-owned Canadian company that started production in 2007. This very young dog food manufacturer has already developed a great reputation for itself, sourcing regional, fresh ingredients to produce high protein, vitamin-packed foods in four varieties that represent some of the best formulas on the natural dog food market. Their Legacy line is Horizon’s answer the to ancestral diet trend – a grain and potato-free food with over 80 percent protein and a great mix of fruits, vegetables, and probiotics with supplemental vitamins and minerals. Horizon Legacy has plenty of protein, great levels of healthy fats and is very low in carbohydrates, making it a solid example of what an ancestral diet-inspired dry food should be.

Pros: Horizon is independent and produces its own food, meaning they have full control and accountability for their products. It also means they make smaller batches of higher quality food. The company asserts that the ingredients are mostly regionally sourced. Horizon Legacy has excellent ratios of protein and fat with a strong mix of vitamins and minerals, really everything your dog needs from a quality food.

Cons: There are no glaring issues with Horizon Legacy. One point to keep in mind, however, is that for consumers seeking out the most natural foods, Horizon is one that does supplement their natural ingredients with vitamins and minerals. For true purists, this may be a deal breaker. Also, although the company says that it sources regionally, it is not completely forthcoming about the details of where all of their ingredients originate. Not many dog food makers do, but again, this combined with the fact that it is a young company may dissuade some people from trusting them just yet. Lastly, this food does contain added salt in very moderate amounts.

Ingredients: Horizon Legacy starts with a fantastic foundation of meat protein from either chicken or fish. Fiber and very minimal carbs come from peas and pea starch, while very high levels of essential omega fatty acids come from salmon oil, flaxseed, and egg. Legacy includes a lot of unique and antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies including bok choy, pineapple, apples, and broccoli, as well as both probiotics and prebiotics for extra digestive support. This food contains yucca, helpful with allergies, skin, and coat, and glucosamine and chondroitin for joint support. Horizon also includes a ‘custom blend’ of special enzymes that help with nutrient absorption, digestion, immunity and detoxification and purification.

Price: Horizon states that it is part of their mission to deliver high-quality dog food that is also affordable. They do keep this food within a very reasonable price range, perhaps even a little bit less than some other quality food options.

Ideal Diet For: The high protein, high fat and low carbs in this food makes it ideal for active dogs or dogs that may be a little overweight. Lots of protein and less carbohydrates support lean muscle mass and help burn fat. These protein to carb ratios as well as the addition of glucosamine and chondroitin make it a really good choice for large breeds, as well.
